All fireworks pose a potential danger for people and the environment Independence Day is upon us, and this year we will again have to face the possibilities of injuries and fires resulting from the misuse of fireworks. The city of Watsonville has decided to sell “safe and sane” fireworks this year after banning the sale last year because of the fire danger. This year we have had cooler temperatures however the fuel moistures are still well below average for our area. What the weather will be like on the 4th is anybody’s guess but we in the fire service know for sure we will have fires. Small fires in fog-dampened grass are of course what we hope to find and not something like the fires that we saw last year here in the county. This year we once again ask for your help in making sure we have a safe and sane 4th of July. If you live in the city limits of Watsonville and you choose to purchase legal fireworks make sure to use them in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember all fireworks are illegal in the rest of the county so do not transport safe and sane fireworks out of the Watsonville city limits. As you may remember in the last two years two local residents, one in Aptos and another in Live Oak, were found to have a large collection of illegal and homemade fireworks, which were discovered by a joint task force of local law enforcement and fire service. The confiscation of these fireworks and explosives may have prevented serious injury and the loss of homes from a devastating fire or explosion. This year the task force will be out informing the public and enforcing laws relating to fireworks, if you see or hear fireworks in your area please make that call to 911 and report it. Independence Day is a great American holiday to remember and honor our founding fathers and the many people in the history of our nation who have given life and limb to protect our freedoms. Our Independence Day celebrations should not come at a cost of lives or property. Please use fireworks legally and report any illegal use of fireworks. You may make the difference in saving someone’s life or limbs by preventing an accident involving fireworks. •••
