taylortollefsonProfessional BMC racing cyclist Taylor Tolleson of Santa Cruz was released to the care of his family Saturday, July 25 from Santa Clara Valley Medical Center after suffering multiple injuries in a hit-and-run crash on Highway 1 just before midnight Thursday, July23.

According to police reports Tolleson, 24, was riding his motorcycle northbound on Highway 1 when a silver 1998 Audi hit him from behind.

Tolleson's mother, Brandee Tolleson, said that he was on his way home from dinner at his parents' house in Aptos. The Audi reportedly dragged Tolleson for about 300 feet, from where the crash occurred at the beginning of the Fishhook, all the way around the infamous curve. He was flown to Santa Valley Clara Medical Center.

The California Highway Patrol said the driver of the Audi did not stop and left the scene of the collision. CHP officers later found the car abandoned jut a few blocks away.

Tolleson finished second overall in the 2006 Amgen Tour of California's Best Young Rider division and most recently raced in the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship on June 5.

The family of Tolleson is offering a reward for any information regarding the collision that left Tolleson badly injured. His injuries included a broken vertebrae, brain trauma broken teeth, and cuts to his face and upper body that required surgery. He's expected to eventually make a full recovery but his racing career may be in jeopardy.
